The highly-anticipated week long seven-day Galway Races Summer Festival kicks off on Monday 27th July with the first of seven races taking place at 5.20pm. Regarded as Ireland’s largest horse racing festival, the iconic Galway Races that boasts superb horse racing, hospitality, entertainment with Live Bands and DJ’s daily, striking fashion and an electric atmosphere that continues to draw people from Ireland and abroad to experience the sheer magic and infectious fun atmosphere that we are famous for! In 2020 Galway City and County will also celebrate being the European Capital of Culture with lots happening in our City before and after racing.
Join us for our ‘Opening Day’ on Monday 27th July as we have a special treat in store for our racegoers in our parade ring with a lively colourful performance! Be sure to arrive early before the start of the first race and gather around the parade ring. You won’t want to miss this!

The Tribes of Galway were fourteen merchant families who dominated the political, commercial, and social life of the city of Galway in western Ireland between the 13th and 16th centuries.
They were the families of Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D’Arcy, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martyn, Morris and Skerrett.
They were of Anglo-Norman or Cambro-Norman origin except for the D’Arcy/Darcy and Kirwan families who were of Irish origin.
The “Tribes” were wealthy merchant families who prospered from trade with continental Europe, they also dominated Galway’s municipal government.
